Forms and signing

What does flattening a PDF do?

Updated 2026-09-17 · 2 min read

Flattening turns interactive layers — form values, signatures, annotations — into ordinary page content.

The values stop being data and become part of the printed page, so they cannot be altered or accidentally cleared.

PDFfont edits PDF text in the document's own embedded font — no white cover boxes.

When to do it

Flatten the copy you send. Keep an unflattened master, because flattening cannot be undone.
