How to Password Protect a PDF on Chromebook

On Chromebook, there is no desktop PDF application to install at all. That is why people end up searching for a way to password protect a PDF properly.

PDF security has two separate parts: the password needed to open the file, and the permissions controlling what can be done once it is open.

Open the document and go to the security settings.

Export, and send the password through a different channel from the file itself.

Saving the finished file

When you export, it saves to Downloads or Drive through the usual dialog. PDF, PNG and JPG are all available.

Encryption is genuine protection; permissions are an instruction that well-behaved readers respect. Do not rely on permissions alone.
