How to Edit a PDF on iPhone

On iPhone, Markup can draw on a page but cannot change a single existing word. That is why people end up searching for a way to edit the text in a PDF properly.
Editing the words in a PDF is only convincing when the replacement uses the document's own embedded font at the original size and baseline.

Open Safari and choose the file from Files, iCloud Drive or a saved mail attachment. Then work through the same steps as anywhere else:
Open the PDF in the editor — it is parsed on your device, so nothing is uploaded just to display it.
Click the line you want to change. The whole line is selected, along with the font name and point size the page actually uses.
Type the new wording and confirm. The text is written back into the page content stream in the same font — no white cover box.
Save as PDF and choose where the file goes.
Saving the finished file
When you export, the iOS share sheet opens so you can save to Files, AirDrop it or send it straight to Mail. PDF, PNG and JPG are all available.
Why nothing needs installing
Because the original font is reused rather than approximated, the changed line is indistinguishable from the text around it.
Because it all runs in a browser tab, it also works on managed school and work devices where you cannot add software.

Will the font change?
No. The font embedded in the document is extracted and reused, and a matching full font is fetched server-side if the subset lacks a character you typed.
Is a white box drawn over the old text?
No. The old glyphs are removed from the content stream and replaced.
Does this work on older iPhone versions?
Yes — any reasonably current browser is enough, regardless of the operating system version.
